This year marks the third time I’ve spent China’s National Day holiday here. Every time it arrives, the sight of the bright red flags fluttering in the streets feels like sparks of fire, warming something deep inside me. In the days leading up to the holiday, the tree-lined paths of campus and the storefronts on street corners are already draped in red, as if the city has dressed itself in celebration. Familiar scenes suddenly glow with a new kind of vitality.

If I had to pick one detail I love most about National Day, it would be the flags lining the streets. I’ve already saved hundreds of photos of them on my phone. The second thing that leaves a deep impression on me is the passion Chinese people carry for travel.

Before the holiday begins, you see families and friends happily making plans, their faces full of expectation and joy. It reminds me of the happiness I felt as a child, waiting for the holidays to arrive. For someone far from home, these little moments make a foreign land feel like home. Even when popular destinations mean long lines and big crowds, people still set off with excitement. Their curiosity and enthusiasm for the world always leave me in awe.

Personally, I prefer another kind of “festivity”. I like to avoid the crowds and search for those quiet corners tucked away by time. This holiday, I discovered a little “paradise” of my own—Shitang town in Wenling, Zhejiang. It was my first visit to a seaside town in China. Stone houses, fresh seafood, and the peaceful rhythm of fishing village life felt completely different from the Hangzhou I know.
At dawn, with the sky clear after a typhoon, I watched the sunrise from the mountaintop. The sea and sky melted into one breathtaking scene. I also visited Pearl Beach, named after its unique pebbles. The waves there were the biggest I’ve ever seen. I sat for hours on the shore, just watching them crash against the rocks, listening to the ocean’s rhythm, as if the whole world had shrunk down to me and the sea. I carried home a few beautiful stones—my most precious souvenirs, holding the quiet and gentleness of Shitang.

Over the past few years, I’ve often felt that even within Zhejiang itself, landscapes, cuisine, and architecture can be strikingly diverse. And yet everywhere I go, one thing remains unchanged: the warmth and kindness of people. If just one province can be so rich and varied, how much more diverse must the whole of China be? For me, every National Day holiday is another chance to rediscover this country.

As a foreigner from Türkiye, I feel truly fortunate to have celebrated this holiday here three years in a row. What I’ve experienced is not only the lively atmosphere of the festival, but also the vitality of this land, the love people have for their country and their lives, and the value they place on culture. It has given me a sense of belonging that crosses borders.
With all my heart, I wish: Happy Birthday, China. May you always be thriving with endless vitality.
